The Benighat Outreach Project is continuing!

In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, a community in crisis was brought to our attention. In the years since, we have provided food assistance, warm clothing, school supplies, and more, while working towards larger projects, all made possible by partnerships with foundations like Charlie’s Heart Foundation, and Rotary International to help the remote, rural community of Benighat survive!

Recently, with the help of a group from the tiny island of La Reunion (east of Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean) we were able to commission new school furniture for the 5 schools in Benighat. The generous donation enabled us to not only provide classroom furniture, but support the local workers in Benighat who made the furniture.

Throughout the 5 schools we distributed 40 bench-desk sets, 115 cushions, 30 tables, 3 large work tables, a podium and carpet for 8 classrooms.

Being able to provide these basics makes a huge difference to the students, teachers and administrators and these unspeakably underfunded school. We are so grateful for the support and trust our sponsors have in up to provide these important services!!

Dear HCC,

On behalf of the school community, I am writing to express our sincere gratitude for the furniture support that you have provided to our school. The new furniture has made a significant difference in the quality of education for our students.

Prior to your support, our school was struggling to provide a comfortable and appropriate learning environment for our students. The old furniture was worn out and uncomfortable, and it was difficult to fit all of our students into the classrooms. As a result, many of our students were not able to focus on their studies, and their attendance was poor.

The new furniture has made a world of difference. The carpets are soft and comfortable, and the desks and chairs are the right size for our students. This has allowed our students to focus on their studies and improve their attendance. In addition, the new furniture has created a more inviting and stimulating learning environment.

For example, the new round tables have made it easier for students to collaborate on projects. The multi-colour desk benches have made it easier for students of different ages to sit together. And the comfortable carpets have made it easier for students to sit and read quietly.

The beneficiaries’ guardians are also grateful for the support that you have provided to our guardians.

As a result of your support, our school is now a more welcoming and supportive environment for our student’s education. We are grateful for your partnership, and we look forward to continuing to work with you to improve the quality of education for our students.

Multiple times a year the HCC Nepal team checks in on the students in the RISE Program in their various locations. We distribute scholarships, provide counseling where needed, evaluate potential new students and furnish the students with the supplies they need for their school year. Depending on the time of year this includes books, pencils, notebooks as well as shoes and clothing where needed, and in the winter, warm clothing. As part of a culture of giving-back we encourage HCC PEAK Program students to join the staff for these site visits. Chadani prepared this report.

I had an incredible opportunity to go to Dhading with Dinesh Uncle, Uttam brother and Laxmi sister and was honoured to be a part of the amazing volunteer work. Our journey began with a 3-hour drive from Kathmandu, during which we marveled at the scenic beauty of Nepal’s countryside. Upon reaching Dhading, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and students of Success School and Advance Academy.

One of the highlights of this trip was the opportunity to meet and interact with more than 54 students supported by HCC’s generous sponsorship. Our senior HCC student; Uttam Basaula and I took the students’ update, Laxmi sister was incharge of the scholarship distribution and Dinesh uncle captured beautiful pictures. Our conversations were casual yet impactful, as we learned about their unique hobbies, educational aspirations, and current life circumstances. Despite facing challenging economic conditions, the children displayed incredible determination and optimism.

We made sure to take detailed notes during these conversations to prepare comprehensive reports for each student. One thing I have realized from this trip was that the educational support that HCC has provided truly made a significant difference in their lives.

The stories we heard were both heartwarming and heart-wrenching. It was touching to witness the children’s hope and resilience, while also being made aware of the hardships they endure. Yet, the education sponsorship has undoubtedly provided them with a sense of hope and possibility for a brighter future.

As part of our visit, we distributed carefully prepared care packages to each student, tailored to their essential needs. These packages contained items such as shampoo, hair bands, sanitary pads, stationery items, notebooks, brushes, toothpaste, comb, and towels. The gratitude and joy expressed by the children upon receiving these gifts were deeply moving.

On behalf of the school committee and the teachers, Shree Bindu Keshar Secondary School expressed their heartfelt appreciation by presenting us with a warm and touching speech along with a token of love and appreciation certificate.

They wanted to convey their gratitude for the positive impact sponsorship has had on their lives and encouraged us to continue doing such great deeds.

This trip has left an indelible mark on all of us, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful endeavor. It felt great to see the contributions that are making a tangible difference, providing these children with hope, education, and the chance to pursue their dreams. Together, we are making a lasting difference in the lives of these wonderful children.

-Chadani

Every month we ask the students to talk to us about a different theme. This month is “life skills”. Kamala weighs in on what skills she has learned and how they will benefit her in the future.

The term “life skills” refers to the skills you need to make the most out of life. It is usually used to talk about any of the skills needed to deal well and effectively with life’s challenges. Life skills are all about the challenges.

Life skills are not about theoreticals, but instead about being practical and applying skills in our daily lives. We all need a set of core life skills to manage work, family and relationships successfully. These skills include planning, focus, self-control, awareness and flexibility. All the life skills that exists are equally important as they directly and indirectly impacted our lives.

One life skill that I have learned and am excited about is making food. I am very good at cooking food and I enjoy it at the same time. I cook one meal per alternate day for the eight students who I live with at the girls annex house. Whenever I am free, I also come to Khushi Ghar to help our younger brothers and sisters with cooking.

Decision making is another life skill that I like the most because I am in a transition phase now in my life, and this skill helps me to deal constructively with making choices about my life. Nowadays, I can make decisions on my own, for my own future, and in order to reach my goals.

The life skills that I am best at are interpersonal because I am able to make and keep friendly relationships, which are of great importance to our mental and social well being. I can easily be friendly and get connected to people whom I just meet. I also have many old friendships and connections that I nurture and mean a lot to me.

I have a little difficulty in expressing my thoughts and ideas both verbally and non-verbally. Before I was a shy person but being active, attending different trainings, and working on various skills like public speaking has helped me a lot.

Earlier this year, HCC Signature Students had a surprise visit from retired NBA star Ronny Turiaf. Ronny spent a couple of days with HCC students in Kathmandu, sharing stories, playing basketball, singing, dancing, and building friendships. Ronny inspired everyone with his life story, positive attitude, and kind spirit. The HCC students were excited to meet Ronny and learn from his life lessons.

Born and raised in Martinique, Ronny moved to Paris at 15 to pursue his basketball career and attend the National Institute of Physical Education (INSEP). Upon graduation from Gonzaga University, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. Soon after, however, he was faced with a potentially life-threatening heart condition and had open heart surgery. Eager to get back on the court, less than 6 months after his operation, Ronny re-signed with the Lakers – a testament to his incredible courage and will. During his professional basketball career, Ronny played with the Lakers, the Miami Heat, the LA Clippers, the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, the Washington Wizards, and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Ronny’s experience led him to found The Heart to Heart Foundation, which aims to raise support and awareness around heart-related issues. Ronny’s life has been marked with giving back, even winning the NBA Cares Community Assist Award in 2010 for his involvement in local community work. In his retirement, Ronny has continued his work to support those in need, most recently visiting our youth home Khushi Ghar.

While sitting with HCC students and sharing his life story, he impressed upon the students that true success is listening to your own heart and working continuously to achieve your dreams. He reminded students that regardless of the roadblocks of life, never lose hope and faith. Ronny exemplifies someone that leveraged the hardships in his life to shape his determination to give back.

Thank you, Ronny, for your inspiring visit and for an experience none of us at Khushi Ghar will ever forget. We are looking forward to seeing you again in Nepal in the near future.

<Sano Kanchha is from Tasarpu in rural Nepal and is currently sponsored by HCC. He is seeking a degree in Animal Husbandry at Jiri Technical School. He wrote an update about an educational trip he took with his school cohort to do a field study of Animal Husbandry. Check out the update below to learn more about Sano Kanchha's studies and trip!

My name is Sano Kanchha. I am studying in Jiri Technical School (JTS) in Jiri-Dolakha taking a Diploma in Animal Husbandry, and I am in my third year. Our course in the 3rd year is more practical learning than the theory. We have not only been limited in our exposure to the district itself but also with the different parts of the country to observe the real situations of taking proper care of the animals. I traveled to the eastern parts of the country from 13th December to the 21st December 2017 for the educational tour. Three days of the tour was spent traveling to the eastern part of Nepal and the rest of the eight days were spent on going to the different places to see the farms. During the visit, we had more of the educational sectors related to agriculture and the animal. During the tour, we got to know about the place where the animals are reared. We asked essential key questions like: How much time do we need to examine the animal? What is the advantage of the place? Which species it? We also did some examination about the condition of the animal by checking and observing them.

We got the chance to be in the Animal Development Farms. In Pokhara, we went to see the fish farming, cage enclosure techniques, and new pig farming methodology. We got to visit famous places like Puranchaur Campus of Agriculture & Forestry University, Gandaki Trout Farm (Bhurjung Khola), Agricultural Research Center- Kaski, Ostrich Farm Rupandehi, Ghasbali Anusandhan Kendra Lalbandhi Sarlahi, Tarara Sai Farm Dharan, National Livestock Breeding Center Pokhara, Pakhribas Bakhra Farm Bandipur, Kamadhenu Dairy & Cattle Farm Gorkha, Panthi Dairy Pokhara, Parsa Banyajantu Arakshyan. We also visited places like Chitwan, Lumbini, Sauraha, Nawalparasi, Janakpur, Hetauda, Itahari, Dharan, Biratnagar, Jhapa, Illam- Kanyam tea garden, Pashupatinagara and some places in Darjeeling.

From the education tour, we gained knowledge about animals, their species, seeds and feeding behavior, curing of disease, rearing animals, grass feeding timetables. I learned many new things and got to explore many places. I got to use the practical application of the studies in the real world related to the different agricultural and animal health-related issues. Thank you for supporting me to go to the educational tour.

With so many of our students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, many were eager to learn more. However, all of our students, regardless of career aspirations, found Amir’s training informative.

Students were taught the basics of CPR, as well as various ways to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack. Additionally, they were taught how to help stop serious bleeding and bandage and tend wounds. They learned important procedural steps to help someone experiencing a serious medical emergency.

Thank you, Amir, for visiting HCC! We are so grateful for the opportunity for students to empower themselves with knowledge regarding important life-saving procedures.

An international organization, Aflateen provides social and financial education to help empower millions of children and young adults worldwide. We’ve partnered with The Umbrella Foundation, an NGO in Kathmandu founded by Irish social activists catering to at-risk Nepali children, to participate in youth Aflateen workshops.

Scheduled to continue throughout the spring, HCC students have taken two Aflateen workshops with students from The Umbrella Foundation so far. HCC hosted The Umbrella Foundation at our youth home Khushi Ghar for the workshop on peer pressure. An important topic to address, especially for teenagers, our students shared stories about their own experiences facing peer pressure. Together, students discussed strategies to address peer pressure in their own communities and activities.

Our thanks to Aflatoun, StartUp4Kids and The Umbrella Foundation for these great opportunities for students to empower themselves with new information and life skills.
With the help of HCC staff, senior students and graduates registered their own in-country NGO, allowing them the opportunity for future key leadership roles in the development, design, and implementation of HCC programming. Our students have taken on leadership roles in the community, utilizing their university training to assist in local schools and service projects; one student even interned with medical researchers from the University of British Columbia in sickle cell research. Embodying our cornerstone philosophy of “Leaders Training Leaders,” our students have taken on leadership roles in their communities with the intention of giving back.

The campaign helps students and community members take charge by obtaining a greater awareness of the prevalence of human trafficking in Nepal and recognizing and avoiding potential trafficking situations. We continue to train future leaders in rural communities through our EOSP and DCI programs by preparing students for higher education. Finally, senior students in the Signature Program had the opportunity to speak about peer pressure in an Alfateen workshop in partnership with The Umbrella Foundation and StartUp4Kids NL, hosted at our Kathmandu youth home, Khushi Ghar. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Umbrella Foundation for more workshops in 2018 and the opportunity for student leadership that comes with them.

With all this in just a month of January alone, we anticipate even more student leadership in 2018. We are filled with immense gratitude for the leadership exhibited by our supporters and sponsors in the US and abroad who make all of this possible. Supporters have generously given their time, connections, and expertise to continue to bolster HCC’s network, finances, and exposure. From large projects like hosting and volunteering on fundraisers across the US, to spreading the word on a smaller, more local scale via social media, HCC supporters continue to provide a stunning example of how to give back as a global community.

On December 31st, HCC staff continued to spread awareness of human trafficking to the most vulnerable constituency in Nepal: school-aged children.

In partnership with Cause Vision, a media company dedicated to developing informational materials for the needs of individual communities, HCC has distributed anti-trafficking comics to schools and communities across rural Nepal. On December 31st, HCC staff distributed the anti-trafficking comic CHAMELI GOES TO SCHOOL to the Shree Janajyote H.S. School in Banepa, rural Nepal. 55 students in grades 6-10 received comics to help them learn how to identify and avoid potential trafficking situations. CHAMELI tells the story of a Nepali student who is trafficked to help students and communities recognize common strategies traffickers use against vulnerable children and families.

CHAMELI GOES TO SCHOOL intends to educate children and communities about the very real danger of human trafficking in a non-threatening way. With adequate information, children and communities are better equipped to prevent human trafficking. Human trafficking still remains a massive problem in Nepal, with hundreds of thousands of Nepalis trafficked within Nepal and abroad. The open borders between Nepal and India provide relatively easy routes for traffickers. Current estimates place 200,000 Nepali women and girls currently trafficked and working in brothels in India. HCC seeks to bridge the information gap in rural communities by providing important safety information in a non-fear-inducing way.

HCC aims to continue distributing comics to even more schools and communities across Nepal in 2018.
