They live in a very remote, mountainous area that is a half-day walk from the nearest dirt road. Laxman’s father, Dal Bahadur, is just now learning the Nepali language (he speaks a local language) and grew up as a subsistence farmer in the high hills of Northern Dhading. Before the earthquake, he was working abroad as a laborer in the Gulf in order to make some money to support his wife and 5 children. As soon as he got the news of the earthquakes and his wife’s death, he came back for his children. “Now I spend all of my time cooking for my children, cleaning, and washing their clothes. They are subsistence farmers and cultivate maize, corn, wheat, rice, and other season produce. Shanti lost her mother during the earthquake, who was alone in the house when it collapsed. Later that same year, her father died from bee stings sustained during a cliff honey harvest. In school, her favorite subject is math, and she finds English difficult. She loves to play in the fields and around the village with her friends.

Puja is 9 years old and studying in grade 3. She lives with her mother, two siblings, and her elderly grandfather in a temporary shelter in their remote village in the high hills. She lost her father during the earthquake when their house collapsed. Puja is from an indigenous community. She enjoys and works hard in school, and she is currently getting extra help in math, as it is her weak subject. She also helps her family by bringing water from the tap each day, which is about 30 minutes from her home. She also must walk 2 hours each day to get to school and back. The main income source of her family is from farming, and her mother works in the field as a subsistence farmer for their day-to-day food, and during the harvest season earns a small amount of money as a field laborer. Puja’s mother, Madhu, says “You are all helping my children with their education and I am working hard to fulfill their other basic requirements. I’m very grateful for this support that is allowing me to continue to care for my children, even as a single woman in the village in Nepal. I want to thank the sponsors of my children and all of the people who are directly and indirectly involved in this program. Thank you for giving us a helping hand and making my children’s life different and meaningful.”

5-year-old Samjhana is in grade 1 and lives in a remote village in the high mountains. She lost her father during the earthquake, who had recently moved his family back to his village from the Terai flatlands. Samjhana, which means “a remembrance” has a mother and two older brothers who are both studying at an organization in a neighboring district, where they were sent after the earthquake when the family was experiencing extreme hardships. “Life has been very difficult for me and my children after the earthquakes and the death of my husband and we have been subject to humiliation and abuse, as I am from a different community. Nonetheless, I have managed to build a small house all by myself, and I have a small piece of land where I cultivate rice, potatoes, and corn. I want to keep my children with me,” Samjhana, like her mom, is determined and willful. She has a big imagination and likes to play pretend, and she is currently learning to ride a bike.

He was born after the earthquake. As a young, widowed mother in rural Nepal, Ram’s mother’s future prospects are precarious. He lives with his young mother and older sister, Sadiksha, in a rented room with two other widowed mothers and their children (also supported by HCC). In this way, they can share resources and support each other. The three mothers have been working for a local businessman, stringing wedding bead necklaces to be sold in the city, for which they make about $20 each per month.
