Students in the Peak Program in Kathmandu are required to volunteer to promote awareness and inspire them to pursue a life of giving back to their community.

Peak Students spread out around Kathmandu Valley in December to volunteer their time to help others. The students get to choose their organizations, so the projects were as different as our kids!

Angela, Manika, Pushpa and DIpa help orphaned children enjoy Christmas at the Twin Otters boys home. The girls wereable to help the boys with their homework, brought gifts, santa hats, cakes and games and spent the day spreading cheer.

“I was thrilled to have spent my time with the children. Seeing them smile from ear to ears after we entered the gate made my heart happy. We cut the cake by singing Christmas carols. It was heartbreaking when we offered to cut the cake and they said that they don’t know how to. This made me realize how lucky we really are. After doing a couple of activities, we gave them chocolates, noodles and juices as a Christmas gift. They were really happy to get the gifts. At the end we had to return. We could see the sad eyes bidding us goodbyes. We had a blast day with them. It was worth the day to remember. We were really happy to be part of their smiles even if it was for a day.” – Manika

Bina, Saraswati, Siwani and Chadani opted to spend a sunny morning cleaning up a strech of road near the girls annex.

“As we worked, we chatted with each other and with passing pedestrians and drivers, who thanked us for our efforts. It was a great feeling to know that we were making a positive impact on our community, even in a small way.

As the morning went on, we made our way down the road, filling up more and more bags with trash. It was hard work, but it was also rewarding to see the difference we were making.

By the end of the morning, we had collected dozens of bags of trash and had cleaned up a significant stretch of road. It was a great sense of accomplishment and responsibility to be able to contribute to the well-being of our community in this way.” – Chadani

The students from the boys annex also participated in a neighborhood clean up!

“People on the street thanked us for our efforts. It made us feel good that we could help. Throughout the day, we kept filling up more and more bags. It was satisfying to see the difference we were making. When we were through, we had gathered more than three bags of rubbish and cleaned up a sizable area of the road. The satisfaction of being able to help our community was wonderful. Overall, helping with my friends was a positive experience. I intend to repeat it and inspire others to participate.” – Harsha

Ambika opted for a volunteer opportunity in her field of veterinary medicine!

“I go every Sunday there and do some bandaging and treatment for the cats and dogs at Kat Center Nepal. I observe things done by doctors and vet nurses. I also prepared some medicine required for the operation. I feel really good at that place. The love and care for animals has grown much deeper. The place I volunteer is now a second home and a good place to learn for me. I am learning very good things along with the service I am doing for the animals. The importance of animals in our life is a must to understand us and to give love, care and support to them.” – Ambika

Gratitude sows the seed of happiness and satisfaction within me. I am grateful for everything that I have. Gratitude is associated with positive emotions.

I have been supported by HCC since I was twelve years old. I am thankful that I have a nice home called Khushi Ghar where so many students like me live. I am thankful that I never go to bed with an empty stomach and always have food in my home. I am blessed with many brothers and sisters with whom I can be myself and share happiness together. I am thankful that I have such a huge and amazing family to rely on and be able to be showered with immense love and support. I am thankful that I have friends who never judge me for who I am and I am fortunate enough to receive their emotional support. More importantly, I am grateful to be a part of HCC and receive a quality education which have aided me in achieving a secured future.

Nothing makes me happier than being able to bring a change in someone’s life. Right now, I have been volunteering in old age home by sharing and listening to their heart touching stories. I was very pleased that I could give a company in their despair situation. I also volunteered in Nepal Association of Blind (NAB) where I realized that if I share something with the people I do not lose anything instead I will be respected and loved by all. I am proud to help all needy people around me.

I am thankful for who I am today because if I had not been supported by HCC I would not have realized the true meaning of being grateful.

Much love,

Pabitra recently finished her grade 10 in her home village of Dhading and moved into Khushi Ghar to continue her education, she wants to be a social worker. All month we are asking the students to tell us what education means to them, here Pabitra elaborates on what the opportunity means to her:

Education is one of the most important tools of our life. Without education it is impossible to do so many things. Education is the key if we want to bring changes in our home and family, society, country and world. Personal and societal development is the result of education. All the people living in this world deserve education.

If we look at the history of Nepal, there has been discrimination and social hinderances for people to get education. I believe this has led to more discriminatory practices, and social problems and evils, which continue to hamper the development of the nation today. Nepal is a poor, developing country in part due to a lack of education among the masses. I think that if people had been given an opportunity to go to school since generations past, today Nepal would have been like the United States where things are more well-developed. So, quality education should be given to all.

Talking about myself, as a child I was supported by my uncle for my care and education in the village. He always took good care of me. At the same time, I had to work a lot so I didn’t have much time to focus on my studies. I used to wake up at 4am each morning to go to work at my uncle’s small restaurant. I would work in the mornings, attend my classes, and then come back to work again until 8pm each night. I used to study as much as I could, but I was often tired and also short on time.

Being supported by HCC since this year, various doors are opening up for me. My life is beginning to change and even my interests are different and new. I am learning new things here like sewing and I am becoming a part of the HCC family. Before, when I was in the village, I thought that I was the only one like me, without a mom or dad. But when I came to HCC, I met so many friends like me and I don’t feel alone anymore. I am surrounded by people here who understand me, and there are so many more kind people around the world who care about us, and that feels so good.

Now, I feel that I can do many things in my life, and that there are lots of possibilities in front of me. Before, I used to study in a village government school. I didn’t get to learn English there, and there were not enough teachers. Now I have an opportunity to study in a good college in Kathmandu and I am very thankful.

I feel very happy and grateful that I am being supported by HCC. I have always been curious to know many things in life, to explore many places, and to learn new things which I am unfamiliar with. I had never thought that one day my life would change this beautifully.

For me, education is my first priority, so that I can gain knowledge and move forward in my life. Education is playing a vital role in uplifting my future.

I have accomplished the journey to my master’s degree and this wouldn’t have been possible without your valuable support. Now I am able to live an independent, self motivated life. I have started working in IQVIA, Bangalore and it’s been quite an experience knowing different types of people, work life and day to day challenges.

My recent holiday trip to Kathmandu was fun and joyous. I had a wonderful time with brothers and sisters at Khushi Ghar and Annex. I interacted with them, told them my stories at difficult times and motivated them as never to lose hope on their dreams. I feel happy to see my brothers and sisters doing very well and leading their life for the changes that they can bring in their society. Being part of HCC family always makes me happy.

I cherish every moment that I spent being in HCC group home. I always admire the work done my Bruce and Susan for changing the life of orphan and needy person like me.

<Sano Kanchha is from Tasarpu in rural Nepal and is currently sponsored by HCC. He is seeking a degree in Animal Husbandry at Jiri Technical School. He wrote an update about an educational trip he took with his school cohort to do a field study of Animal Husbandry. Check out the update below to learn more about Sano Kanchha's studies and trip!

My name is Sano Kanchha. I am studying in Jiri Technical School (JTS) in Jiri-Dolakha taking a Diploma in Animal Husbandry, and I am in my third year. Our course in the 3rd year is more practical learning than the theory. We have not only been limited in our exposure to the district itself but also with the different parts of the country to observe the real situations of taking proper care of the animals. I traveled to the eastern parts of the country from 13th December to the 21st December 2017 for the educational tour. Three days of the tour was spent traveling to the eastern part of Nepal and the rest of the eight days were spent on going to the different places to see the farms. During the visit, we had more of the educational sectors related to agriculture and the animal. During the tour, we got to know about the place where the animals are reared. We asked essential key questions like: How much time do we need to examine the animal? What is the advantage of the place? Which species it? We also did some examination about the condition of the animal by checking and observing them.

We got the chance to be in the Animal Development Farms. In Pokhara, we went to see the fish farming, cage enclosure techniques, and new pig farming methodology. We got to visit famous places like Puranchaur Campus of Agriculture & Forestry University, Gandaki Trout Farm (Bhurjung Khola), Agricultural Research Center- Kaski, Ostrich Farm Rupandehi, Ghasbali Anusandhan Kendra Lalbandhi Sarlahi, Tarara Sai Farm Dharan, National Livestock Breeding Center Pokhara, Pakhribas Bakhra Farm Bandipur, Kamadhenu Dairy & Cattle Farm Gorkha, Panthi Dairy Pokhara, Parsa Banyajantu Arakshyan. We also visited places like Chitwan, Lumbini, Sauraha, Nawalparasi, Janakpur, Hetauda, Itahari, Dharan, Biratnagar, Jhapa, Illam- Kanyam tea garden, Pashupatinagara and some places in Darjeeling.

From the education tour, we gained knowledge about animals, their species, seeds and feeding behavior, curing of disease, rearing animals, grass feeding timetables. I learned many new things and got to explore many places. I got to use the practical application of the studies in the real world related to the different agricultural and animal health-related issues. Thank you for supporting me to go to the educational tour.

Hello Everyone! How are you all doing? I am fine here and hope everything is good there. The temperature here is not that cold now and starting to get hot. I am regularly attending my college. I am giving my unit test, and tomorrow is the last test. This is just a test to review what our performance is and how well we are studying.

Yesterday, I went to Baudhanath and Pashupatinath, a religious temple of Nepal, with one of the Canadian volunteers, and her name is Katie. She is a sweet person, and it is good knowing her. I gave a tour of our historical knowledge about this temple. She wanted to visit this temple before going to Dang, and Dinesh uncle gave me a chance to take her there. It is always a fun time when the new volunteers come here, and we get to listen to their experiences. I am so glad that we have the opportunity to meet new people and get the exposure.

In my leisure time, I am knitting a muffler and helping in Khushi Ghar. I am also preparing for the upcoming pre-board exam which will probably be after a month.

Thank you for helping and supporting us. Lots of Love from Nepal!

He died of complications due to alcoholism, leaving her young mother unable to care for her. She was brought to an orphanage by her grandmother, eventually making her way to HCC.

I am Barsa studying in Grade 12 taking core management as my main subject. My board exam is after two months, and for better performance, I am studying accountancy in a private tutoring center which is a half an hour walk from Khushi Ghar. I want to build my career in the accountancy field and also for better marks I am taking this tutoring.

I am also tutoring two of the new students- Goma and Rama who are studying in Grade 9 and 10 respectively. The subject that they are getting help from me is Mathematics. It has been two and a half months and I am happy about it as I am getting to experience something new in the field of teaching. This is my first paying job. Goma and Rama are studying in a government school and they sometimes have a hard time understanding the terms in English. So, it’s challenging and also a good opportunity for me to teach them new subject matter each weekend, .i.e. on Saturday for two hours.

As my exam is approaching, I am devoting most of my time in studies. Last weekend we (Shristi, Siwani and I) went to Syambhunath, a Buddhist temple. Siwani was mesmerized by the beauty of the temple and it was her first visit to this temple. We went there on the occasion of Saraswati Puja (the day to worship the Goddess of Wealth).

Thank you for helping me and making my every day more glorious and beautiful.

When student Phoebe Ramaty first heard about Himalayan Children’s Charities through the Maya Gold Foundation, she was looking to get involved with an organization that helped people, especially orphaned children. HCC turned about to be just the match, and Phoebe ended up raising over $600 for HCC by selling clothing, toys, and candies at the Winter Faire held at her school, Mountain Laurel Waldorf School in New Paltz, New York. We interviewed Phoebe about what interested her about HCC and her advice for rolling up your sleeves and making a difference.

How did you first hear about Himalayan Children’s Charities?

I heard about HCC through the Maya Gold Foundation, which is based in New Paltz, N.Y. I was looking to do something that helped people and was really interested in working with an orphanage. Luckily my Mother knew a board member at the Foundation who she arranged for me to meet – Noelle Adamo. Noelle suggested that I got involved with HCC and she gave me the contact information for the charity.

The Maya Gold Foundation seeks to collaborate with carefully selected NGOs in Nepal. They work to provide essentials to children in need and opportunities for cultural exchange between youth in Nepal and New Paltz.

Why did you want to use the Winter Faire at your school as an opportunity to fund raise for HCC?

A lot of people attend our school Winter Faire so I thought it would be a good way to raise awareness about the children in Nepal. I made a 3D poster where I showcased several stories of the HCC children and also information about the charity and its founders and staff. I also thought having a tombola raffle would be a fun way to fundraise as a lot of the “customers” are children!

What did you sell at the Winter Faire to fundraise?

I sold clothes, books, toys, chocolate, candy – you name it! The clothes were sold separately on a rack next to my table and were not part of the tombola raffle. My brother and I donated our old books and toys. I bought some chocolate and candy to make sure children wanted to come to my stand. My parents had lots of clothes samples as they work in Fashion/textiles so that was where I got the clothes from.

What kind of information about HCC were you able to convey to your fellow students?

Some people asked me what HCC was so I was able to tell them. As well as that, I had my 3D poster on the table with lots of information about the individual children and their life stories. I talked to several parents as well as children. I also had fliers that I was able to hand out to anyone that showed interest. I hope I spread the word of what life is like for children in Nepal compared to us here in the USA.

Why did you want to support HCC specifically? What about the work of HCC is meaningful to you?

I want to support HCC because of the work they do to save children from disadvantaged backgrounds and empower them through education and mentoring. Also, I like how HCC is willing to partner with other charities like The Maya Gold Foundation.

What advice would you give to other students who want to support organizations that work for causes they believe in? How would you suggest becoming a student organizer?

My advice would be – don’t be afraid to contact the organization you are interested in. I am sure they would welcome your interest and help.To become a student organizer, find out what the charity needs and think of ways you can help. It may not only be raising money but also raising awareness of their work. Let people know they exist and share the stories of the work they do. Think of ways you can spread the word. Try to coordinate a fundraiser or go around to your local stores and see if you can get them interested in donating supplies. Get a group of your friends together and brainstorm for ideas – they may also like to help when they know what you are doing.
