On June 30th, we went on a trip to Lower Dhading. The purpose of our trip was to visit and provide necessary things for the students, which was supported by HCC. All together there were five of us: Dinesh, DP, Mun Maya, Arya and me.

On the day of our visit, we all gathered in Khushi Ghar at five-thirty in the morning. We had packed up packages and bags with school supplies, as well as personal care items. Once they were arranged into the exterior seat of the car, we began our journey to Dhading.

On the way to Dhading, we had several different funny and interesting talks with each other. During our discussions, we also enjoyed the mesmerizing sceneries of mountains, hills and paddy fields. Around 8AM, we stopped near Khaja Ghar for breakfast, which consisted of paratha, boiled eggs, chana, and coffee for breakfast. As soon as we finished, we headed towards Baireni.

Our first meeting place was at Success Academy School in Baireni, Dhading. The students supported by HCC had all gathered there, with huge smiles across their faces; they were incredibly happy to see us. This made us feel warmly welcomed. Later on, we met with the students one by one asking them about their school, family, as well as their life in general. The questions were asked Mun Maya and Dinesh, Arya noted down every different detail of the students, DP handed out the different bags and packages, and I was assigned the role of the photographer. Each student was given 6,000 NRS. This amount of money will aid them in buying basic necessities. Additionally we questioned some newer students, which would also be provided with scholarships, school supplies and personal care items.

When we finished our meeting with the students at Birene, we began our journey to Dhading Besi. On the way, we stopped by a hotel for lunch. The food there was incredibly delicious, especially the soup that consisted of local chicken; that was our favorite! After lunch, we continued traveling to Dhading Besi. Also on the way, we picked up the father of five Magar kids that are supported by HCC. These children go to the Advanced Academy School, and stay in a school hostel. The father and his children were reunited after a couple months, so he ended up joining us on our voyage to spend some time with his very own.

Our second meeting destination was at Advanced Academy School, where the father’s kids study. Once again, we were happily welcomed. Similarly to the Success School, there we also met up with the students individually, where they were asked about their learning, and their well-being. We then distributed bags/packages, along with NRS 6000/ thousand to each student, just like at the other school. Scholarships were also given out to several deserving students, whom were also new.

We all had light snacks on the way back home to Kathmandu, which we arrived at around seven at night.

All together, we met forty-seven students that consisted of both new and old ones. The children seemed very pleased and thankful for being provided with such scholarships.

Overall, the trip was amazing. As for Arya and me, this was a new one. It was very refreshing, for us, to be able to help children in need of a more prominent future. We hope to do this again very soon!

For the last year we have been helping support a marginalized community in Behighat, Dhading. The Pandemic plunged many families into abject poverty. To help their children stay in school HCC has been providing food support, educational supplies as well as other person hygiene items. On the most recent trip, Mun Maya, Dinesh and HCC students Koshish and Dikshanta traveled to Benighat, Rorang Dhading to distribute supplies to the 5 schools in our outreach program.

All 292 students received new uniforms. Uniforms are required and many students end up wearing very tattered and dirty clothes to school to fulfill the requirement. The two new uniforms each child received will make it easier to clean or repair their uniforms.

We provided stationery items such as paper, packs of pencils and colored pencils, pens, a pencil case, erasers, sketch books, and rulers to 194 students to help in their studies and academic performance.

Additionally, we distributed personal hygiene items such as soap, hair oil, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair comb, vaseline cream, nail cutter, etc to 194 students.

We helped educated them on the benefits and importance of good personal hygiene in preventing children from picking up or spreading germs and infectious diseases.

Each child received the stationary and personal care packed in new backpacks for them to carry to school.

There is a lot of work to be done to help this community, and all the schools and families of the supported students who received the support were grateful and said that the support of the organization will make a positive impact in the students lives.

I recently finished my second term examination. I tried my best and I did well.

After that we had sports day. Due to covid-19, we could not play all the games in the college. We only played for one day and then the college remain closed. Now we are having our online classes. I am studying hard and trying my best but feel difficult to attain the class through screen for such long time. Our government had decided make all the people vaccinated and re-open the school, college, etc. So we took vaccine and we took the vaccine card .

We are preparing for the Board Examination. We have already completed our half course. After the course complete we will have two month leave for preparation for the final examination.

This month we also celebrate the birthday of Dinesh uncle. We ate a delicious cake. We also celebrate Maghe sankranti. Maghe Sankranti is a Nepalese festival observed on the first of Magh in the Vikram Sambat or Yele calendar bringing an end to the winter solstice containing month of Poush.

I was able to handle my problems myself, and if not me then someone in Khushi Ghar will always be there to help me when I am in need. My life now is better than before. My life has improved a lot because I do all my work myself. Before I used to depend upon others for everything but now I am living an independent life.

Showing the world what you can do is the feeling of success. You should never compare with others; you should always trust in who you are and what you can do. And do not expect someone to push you for your success; it is you who needs to move ahead. It is not easy to become successful; you should also be able to overcome the challenges.

My biggest success in my life is that I am able to study what I want to become in future. This is possible because of HCC supporters who are always there during my hardships. Right now, I am having practical classes from my University and I am doing well in my studies.

My goal in life is to become a successful hotel manager. For that, I need to do a lot of hard work in my studies. During my free time, I also have been helping to cook in Khushi Ghar. I love cooking.

Besides studies, I love playing football and basketball. I have received awards from my school as well as inter-school basketball and football (soccer) tournaments. I also got most valuable player. This is also a huge success for me. Since my childhood I loved playing football and wanted to become a player and challenge different teams. I also got selected for the Russia football game. The wish can never be fulfilled if we do not give our efforts and our best. I realized that hard work is the word that you should always remember and work for it.

Saraswati will earn her Bachelor’s Degree in March, she has been with HCC for 10 years and is excited to graduated and start the next chapter of her life.

For me, success is achieving the target set by yourself and gaining it through your hard work and dedication (which also includes the life skills training that I got to learn at Khushi Ghar). Success is also being able to make people around you proud with all your achievements.

I feel successful being able to complete my responsibilities as a senior sister to all junior brother and sisters at Khushi Ghar. I also feel successful being able to live a life at a different area of the country, far from the capital city on my own and completing my university degree.

I was very scared when I had no choice but to travel to Bhairahawa to complete my further studies. I had a very hard time adjusting to the new environment which was very different from the kind of life I had in Kathmandu. I finally got used to the way and started enjoying my life there. I take this as the biggest achievement in my life. And now, I have completed my studies and have planned to work in hospital. This is all possible because of HCC family. If it had not been the HCC family, I would not be this successful as I am today.

Thank you so much!!

Saraswati

What do you find most rewarding about sponsoring students through HCC?

I was impressed by the innocent smiles of the children in the mountain. To me, they seem to be very poor and have nothing but actually they have a lot more than I have (coming from a modern business city). I do hope they have good health, good education and one day they will be able to contribute back to their community, their country.

Do you have any advice for people trying to find a way to give back?

If anyone wants to give back to the society, I would suggest for them to focus on our next generation including food, clean water, health, education and environmental protection. Children are our future. The future is theirs.

We hope next time you come to Nepal you can meet the students at Khushi Ghar!

I would be delighted to meet the students. I think it would be great if it can be arranged when I go to Nepal next time (maybe next year).

HCC Student Shristi wrote about her volunteer work for a charity futsal tournament for female empowerment held by the organization Girls Empowered by Travel. Futsal is a derivative of soccer played indoors with 5 person teams.

I am a student of Mass Communication and Journalism in Trinity College in Kathmandu. I was always looking for some platform to enhance my skills and explore the world. On July 1st, I got this wonderful opportunity to volunteer for the Girl Power Futsal Tournament (a type of indoor soccer) organized by Girls Empowered by Travel Nepal (GET-Nepal) with an objective to provide a platform for young girls to showcase their talents through sports. It was my first time volunteering. I was a bit nervous looking at a huge group of people very excited about the futsal match. I was happily welcomed by GET coordinator, Sajana, and they made me feel comfortable. I was very happy and excited to meet other fellow volunteers my age and get along with them.

I was given the role of tracking the score of the futsal match and report it to the event coordinator, Radhika for tallying, as it was a league tournament. I was working along with other volunteers closely, and that helped me to overcome my shyness. I was happy that this helped me enhance my level of self-confidence.
I never thought that one day’s volunteering would help me to connect with so many other young girls who are inspiring and motivated to work for girl issues in Nepal. I would like to thank Khil for creating this network between GET Nepal and me. I am highly encouraged and motivated to get involved in upcoming events of GET Nepal.

13-year-old Shanta now is in grade 5. He lost his mother during the earthquake and now stays with his father, three brothers (Laxman and Ram) and a younger sister. They live in a very remote, mountainous area that is a half-day walk from the nearest dirt road. Shanta’s father, Dal Bahadur, is just now learning the Nepali language (he speaks a local language) and grew up as a subsistence farmer in the high hills of Northern Dhading. Before the earthquake, he was working abroad as a laborer in the Gulf in order to make some money to support his wife and 5 children. As soon as he got the news of the earthquakes and his wife’s death, he came back for his children. “Now I spend all of my time cooking for my children, cleaning, and washing their clothes. I do not want to leave my children. I want to be there for my children and give them a good life and education. I am sure that my children will do something great and I will be a proud father.”
