COVID Update from HCC Headquarters

Dear HCC Family,

We hope you and your family are healthy and safe during this unprecedented global health crisis.

To keep our students safe, we are, first and foremost, following health guidelines released by the Nepali government. As of today, Nepal has only had one reported case of COVID-19. However, the Nepali government has halted visitor visas until at least April 15 and closed almost all public tourist sites (including Mt. Everest). The government has also ordered the closure of schools, universities, cinemas, gyms, clubs, public swimming pools and museums until April 30.

Our Signature Program and Higher Education students are now at Khushi Ghar and the nearby annex apartments, and our students in the Rural Education Scholarship Program are at home with their families.

We are encouraging ALL of our students and staff to practice safe social distancing and increased hygiene procedures. All HCC events, including the planned March graduation ceremony in Kathmandu, are suspended for the foreseeable future. We have also suspended student field trips and are limiting student contact with public places.

Despite the risk to our students and staff being low, HCC is taking these precautions seriously. Additionally, if anyone is to become ill, HCC will provide complete medical coverage.

Our students are stepping up and helping each other with their studies: university students holding their own home school classes for the younger members so they won’t fall behind, and generally supporting the whole HCC family in this crisis.

Saraswati Works Public Health Event with Karuna Charitable Society

Each year, the Karuna Charitable Society (KCS), a charity formed by final year medical sciences students at Universal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal, host an event designed to bring free medical care and health check-ups to the most in need and vulnerable local community members in Bhairahawa. HCC Student Saraswati participated in the community event this year, working, teaching and having fun with the community in Bhairahawa.

Although officially a community health event, the KCS event also incorporates fun community events, like sports, talent shows, theater, and trivia games. Saraswati played basketball during the event to blow off some steam and participate in healthy competitive camaraderie. In addition to the blood drive and community health services, the event also sought to help victims in Nepal of the horrific flooding overwhelming Nepal, Bangladesh, and India.

Nari Teaches Reproductive Health as a Research Project for Nursing Degree

Due to obtain her Bachelors of Science in Nursing, HCC Student Nari recently completed a research project on a topic of her choice. Utilizing the cornerstone HCC principle of giving back to the community, Nari chose a research topic that would not only provide useful and interesting public health data, it would also provide her with the opportunity to give back to a community she used to call home.

Nari chose the following topic: Impact of Educational Intervention on Awareness regarding Reproductive Health among Adolescents. With the permission from the Principal and school administration, Nari was able to return to her alma mater, the Reliance School, an English language secondary school. Some of our younger students are currently attending the Reliance school, so it was a thrill for Nari to be able to return to such a friendly homestead. Over the course of two weeks, Nari taught 65 students on the topic of reproductive health. She measured her results through a pre-exam before teaching and final exam post teaching to ensure her students grew in their knowledge of reproductive health.
