On International Women’s Day 2026, we celebrate the power of education and the importance of creating opportunities for girls everywhere. At HCC, our mission is simple: to improve the lives of girls in Nepal through education and empowerment.

In many communities across Nepal, girls still face significant barriers to education. Poverty, social expectations, and limited resources can prevent girls from staying in school and reaching their full potential. At HCC Nepal, we work to change that.

HCC has played a very important role in shaping me into the person I am today. As a woman, I feel grateful for the opportunities and trust it has given me. Namaste! I am Ambika and I am proud to introduce myself as a confident young woman. I have been with HCC from when I was a young child. The support, love and care from HCC has helped me build my own identity and has given me the support to be able to choose who I want to be. Providing education for girls in a country like Nepal is very important as it helps us overcome poverty and other social issues. For me, I am now studying in Bachelor in Veterinary Science, and my aim is to be a good veterinarian and well known to people for my work towards animals. My name is Smriti Nepali, and I am delighted to share a little update on my life with you all. Currently, I am 18 years old and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) at Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences. I’m in my first year, and just recently completed the first terminal exams, though the results are yet to be published.

In my family, we are a total of five members. There’s my younger sister, my younger brother, my mother, my father, and of course, myself. My father plays a crucial role as the main caretaker in our household, and I’m truly grateful for his support and guidance.

As for my academic interests, I find myself particularly drawn to hematology, while pathology is not quite my favorite subject. On an average day, I dedicate around 4 to 5 hours to my studies, ensuring I stay on track with my coursework.

Outside of academics, I have a passion for traveling and exploring new places. Additionally, one of the highlights of my school or college days is engaging in discussions with friends during breaks. It’s always refreshing to exchange thoughts and ideas with peers.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my sponsors. Your support and generosity have enabled me to pursue my education further, and for that, I am truly thankful. Being able to continue my studies and fulfill my aspirations fills me with happiness, and I am excited for the journey ahead.

When we first started out in rural Nepal, it was in response to the devastation caused by the earthquakes in 2015. It was around this time we first met Sita. She was bright and outgoing, and suffering. She’d broken her arm and it hadn’t healed properly. In addition to providing educational support, we endeavored to reset her arm.

She impressed us right away with her perseverance and resilience. After several surgeries and physical therapy, Sita recovered and was able to stay in school and help her single mother with her siblings. 

Sita has always been an excellent student and we happily awarded her a Peak Scholarship when she applied. Sita is currently settling into her new life in Kathmandu. She is attending nursing school so she can help people, inspired by her own medical journey.

Two new students to the Khushi Ghar family are finding themselves right at home! Both students joined HCC at the start of the school year and we are so happy they are finding their way.

I’ve got to learn so many new things. This month we did many things. We celebrated Saraswati Puja. I had an event in my school that day. We worshiped goddess Saraswati by offering tika and garlands and taking blessings from her for knowledge and wisdom. I had lots of fun that day in school.

I got involved in PEP (Peace Education Program). We have 10 sessions of Peace Education Program in total. Among them, 4 sessions have already been completed. This session helps us to acknowledge peace which is within us and we don’t need to go anywhere to find it. It is a very useful and knowledgeable program for us.

This month one of our sponsors came to visit us. We all had a very useful conversation with him. He was a very nice and generous person. Bruce’s uncle also came to visit us. We talked about our second terminal examination, college experience and so on with him. He motivates us to study hard and do better next time.

We also had a mentorship program this month. We learn about mental health and its importance and impacts in our daily lives. We all members also share our views and experiences regarding mental health. 

In February, our school also organized the Met Gala Championship for three days. I had a lot of fun that day. I took part in an air hockey game. It was fun to take part in different activities and I enjoyed it a lot.

Talking about my second terminal examination, It was not so good. I scored very low marks in my computer science. I need to put more hard effort in math also. Next time, I’ll work hard and score better marks in my exam.

Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to the sponsor for all the love, support and help. Thank you so much. I’m very grateful for what I have now.

I experienced a lot of new things. Firstly, I got involved in the Peace Education Program every Saturday in Khushi Ghar. I am learning the ways to have peace and good moral ethics from these sessions. We also had a mentorship program this month. We talked about mental health in that session. We came up with many unique ideas to maintain good mental health and all of us shared different experiences which led us to have both good and bad mental health. We also welcomed one of the most helpful and motivational donors in our house and had a lot of fun conversation with him. He gave us so many ideas to do better in life at studies as well as career. I am really very grateful to meet and talk to him. Bruce uncle also came to visit us this month. I had many consultations with Bruce uncle too.We talked about our examinations, college, experience in Khushi Ghar and so on. He encouraged me to be better in my studies and life.

This month I also had many fun activities in my school. We had our Champions Gala. I participated in different games. I also had results of the second terminal examinations this month. I could have brought much nicer results than this time. And I will do better than this next time. I will study harder and be better than today.

Every year, we celebrate International Women’s Day at Khushi Ghar. Nepal has a lot of work to do on the gender equity front, so it’s important that both the boys and the girls participate in these celebrations. This year, Suman takes the reigns on the Women’s Day report!

Mom, sister, teacher, or aunt all contribute in their own unique ways. Women can be strong, smart, and kind. Without them it’s hard to think of a world, as they are the one who give us this beautiful life. 

Like every year we celebrate Women’s Day with joyful moments and beautiful memories.This year we had coincidence that  Women’s Day and Hinduism’s greatest festival Shiva Ratri was on the same day. 

Talking about Women’s Day, we had an amazing time celebrating Women’s Day in HCC( Himalayan Children Charity). We had a small program in the presence of Bruce’s uncle packed with cool stuff. Firstly, we meditated for a couple of minutes to be comfortable and to relax our mind. We heard some awesome poems and speeches about incredible women which empowers women. There were songs that made us feel strong, and dances that were both beautiful and powerful.

Group dance was entertaining in the end which made everyone  smile.The best part was the yummy food we all enjoyed together. It was a day full of joy, celebrating the strength and talents of women in the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”  as it’s the theme for 2024.

Lastly, I would like to thank every woman in HCC i.e Sumir didi, Susan aunt  and especially Hira aunty who did not let us feel absence of a mother.

Students in the Peak Program in Kathmadu volunteer every month at various places in their community. Sometimes they join organized groups, sometimes they organize their own projects. Volunteering helps develop a passion for philanthropy and instills the importance of giving back to your community. Our future veterinarian, Ambika, volunteers at the Katmandu Animal Treatment Center every month. In January she brought her sister and some friends to join her.

G: For my volunteer work I went to the  KAT center with my sister. We went there in the morning and I cleaned the kennels of every dog. I fed them and gave them the water. I also played with them! We came home in the afternoon. I enjoyed it a lot there.

I am writing this volunteer report to provide an overview of my experience at the KAT Centre (Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre). We Annex boys went there to volunteer. The KAT Centre is a non-profit organization located in Kathmandu, Nepal, dedicated to improving the welfare of street dogs and cats through rescue, treatment, and adoption programs. I volunteered at the center  and had the opportunity to contribute to their mission and witness their impactful work firsthand.

During my time at the KAT Centre, I participated in various activities that aimed to support the organization’s objectives. I assisted the center’s staff in providing care to the rescued animals. This involved feeding the animals, cleaning their enclosures, and providing them with exercise and socialization. 

My experience as a volunteer at the KAT Centre was both fulfilling and eye-opening. The dedication of the staff and volunteers towards improving the lives of street dogs and cats was inspiring. I learned valuable lessons about animal welfare, compassion, and the importance of community involvement. I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the KAT Centre’s mission and would highly recommend others to volunteer at this remarkable organization. Their work not only transforms the lives of animals but also creates a positive impact on society as a whole.

A cornerstone of the HCC philosophy is philanthropy. The students in the Peak Program in Kathmandu volunteer at various events and centers in their community as well as creating their own programs to target local needs. 

In January several students volunteered with a local organization helping provide nutritious food to hungry people, throughout the city. These are their stories, in their words.

then headed to the destination. We started the distribution to all the ones needed. The happy faces made our hearts flutter and we felt very glad that I got to be a part of the project. – Sonu

I volunteered with the Food for Hungry organization. The main objective of the organization is about giving food to people who really need it, especially around religious sites. So on Saturday as it is my day off I decided to be a part of the group. I woke up super early and headed to the place where we cooked and packed the food. It was like a little kitchen adventure! After that, we went to Chabahil and Pashupati to give out the food to those who needed it. Seeing the smiles on their faces made me so happy inside. It felt amazing to be part of something that brings joy to people. – Angela

I volunteered with ‘Food for Hungry.’ We in Annex were part of the preparation step, cutting vegetables and cooking. The cooked food was placed into aluminum foil boxes and prepared for transportation. Our group distributed these meals to areas like Chabahil and Pashupatinath. It was heartwarming to see the joy on people’s faces as they received the food. – Sunita

Since 2015, when devastating earthquakes rocked Nepal, we have been overseeing the care, education and support of Anish, Smiriti, and Monika. We visit them a few times a year, and this year they came to Khushi Ghar!

On December 28, 2023, a team from HCC Nepal, consisting of staff members Laxmi and Dinesh, along with intern Pushpa, visited the local municipality in Bidur. The visit aimed to engage with the local authority and provide information about our ongoing initiatives.

During the visit, our team had the opportunity to meet with students at Uttargaya School. The focus was on monitoring the progress of four specific students: Anish, Smiriti, Manika, and Arun. The team interacted with the students to understand their academic and personal development.

Our team actively engaged in monitoring activities, including capturing photos and noting written updates about the student’s performance and well-being. This information will be valuable in assessing the impact of our educational support programs.

In addition to monitoring, the team also took the initiative to distribute winter supplies to the students. Recognising the harsh winter conditions in Rasuwa Nuwakot, the distribution aimed to provide the necessary warmth and comfort to the students during the colder months.

The visit to the local municipality and Uttargaya Public English School on December 28 2023, allowed HCC Nepal to strengthen its connection with the local community. The monitoring activities conducted by the team will contribute to the ongoing improvement of our educational support programs. Furthermore, the distribution of winter supplies reflects our commitment to addressing the holistic needs of the students we serve.
