Summer Volunteering

Every month the student at Khushi Ghar are required to volunteer some of their time to local organizations around Kathmandu. They are free to choose something that aligns with their career path or they can choose something different each time.

Smirti: I’m currently working at Manmohan Hospital as a volunteer from 1am to 7am. I’m experiencing many things at the same time. I’m working at the lab and at the report dispatch area and I’m glad that I am able to help the people. I’m learning techniques and technologies during this time and on my way to learn new skills.

Ganga: My 5 sisters and I went to help in packing food for the poor. We packed about 500 or more . We helped to pack rice and curry and divided among us where to distribute the food. We helped to pack food for different places . As we distribute the food among the people . They seemed so happy seeing their faces. I too felt happy. This volunteering activity takes about 5 hours and it is very dear to our hearts.

Rina: In July, my volunteer efforts were focused on contributing to the local cat center. This experience was both fulfilling and enriching, as I engaged in various activities that supported the well-being of the animals in the center.

I assisted with routine cleaning tasks at the cat center. This involved sanitizing the living spaces, ensuring that the environment remained hygienic and comfortable for the dongs.I also had the opportunity to interact with the dogs. Engaging in

playtime activities, I used toys and games to provide mental stimulation and physical exercise for the dogs.

These interactions helped the dogs to remain active and happy, and also provided them with much-needed socialization and emotional support.

Working at the center not only helped me develop practical skills but also reinforced my appreciation for the dedication and hard work involved in animal welfare. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work and further contributing to the well-being of the animals at the center.

January Volunteer Dispatch pt.1

A cornerstone of the HCC philosophy is philanthropy. The students in the Peak Program in Kathmandu volunteer at various events and centers in their community as well as creating their own programs to target local needs.

In January several students volunteered with a local organization helping provide nutritious food to hungry people, throughout the city. These are their stories, in their words.

I have been volunteering for a project called ‘Food for the Hungry’. In the early morning we gathered and started preparing food. We prepared fried rice and potato curry. We packed almost 50 to 60 packets of the food. We started from around 6 am in the morning and finished packing at around 8 am. Then we headed to Pashupatinath for the distribution. We carried the water and the food and

then headed to the destination. We started the distribution to all the ones needed. The happy faces made our hearts flutter and we felt very glad that I got to be a part of the project. – Sonu

I volunteered with the Food for Hungry organization. The main objective of the organization is about giving food to people who really need it, especially around religious sites. So on Saturday as it is my day off I decided to be a part of the group. I woke up super early and headed to the place where we cooked and packed the food. It was like a little kitchen adventure! After that, we went to Chabahil and Pashupati to give out the food to those who needed it. Seeing the smiles on their faces made me so happy inside. It felt amazing to be part of something that brings joy to people. – Angela

I volunteered with ‘Food for Hungry.’ We in Annex were part of the preparation step, cutting vegetables and cooking. The cooked food was placed into aluminum foil boxes and prepared for transportation. Our group distributed these meals to areas like Chabahil and Pashupatinath. It was heartwarming to see the joy on people’s faces as they received the food. – Sunita
