I was born in a beautiful village named Dolakha. All my family members are in the village. I came from an economically weak background. My mother and father had a difficult time looking after me and for my education. I have six family members in my village. I was brought to an organization by my aunty who also settled in Kathmandu. She used to work in one of my teachers house. I came to Kathmandu because there was no one to look after me and for my further studies. My dream in life was to become a doctor and help my family. If I had stayed in my village I would have gotten married like most of my friends. My father cannot hear properly. He does not understand what other speak. So, it was very difficult for me to stay in my village. Both my father and mother works as a farmer in my village.

But my life has changed a lot now I am getting a quality education where I can fulfill my dreams. I am getting to study the subject that I had always dreamt of. This is all because of HCC who has been supporting since I was in UKG [upper kindergarten]. I would not have such an opportunity if I was not supported by HCC. I have been learning new things in Khushi Ghar like cleaning, cooking, buying vegetables, getting involved in skills development training and many more. I have learned time management and to be a reliant and responsible person. We live as a group without any arguments and disputes. I also have an uncle and aunty who guides me to a right path, brothers and sisters who teach and support me. At HCC, we have various roles and responsibilities. As a member of HCC, we have certain criteria like we are made to help and support one another in need. Sometimes, we have various kinds of programs or meetings on the topic the time management, Financial issues, decision making, and many more.

For me, family is another important thing in life where we get protection, love, care and the framework of values to each of its members. Family are the people who is to be easily trusted. Everything can be shared with family.
So, I would like to thank all the members of HCC and sponsors who has always been there for me when I needed you. Your help and donation means a lot to me.
All the activeness in me is all because of you. Thank you for everything.

Over 250 people attended our events in Boston, New York and Atlanta, and we raised over $50,000 – all of which will go to help our students in Nepal! A special thank you to our corporate supporters, individual sponsors and hard-working volunteers that made this year’s events a resounding success! Many thanks to Mun Maya for traveling from Nepal to share her experiences and stories growing up in the HCC family.

It is the third time I visit Nepal. The first two were trekking to the EBC [Everest Base Camp] and the Island Peak.

What inspired you to make your trek a fundraiser?

I was actually inspired by a Japanese mountaineer when I trekked to the Everest Base Camp. I saw a poster in a small shop on my way to the base camp (somewhere between Phakding and Namche). He raised a fund to support the sherpa’s family.

How did you find HCC?

I was searching on internet if there is any NGO who is support the young kids in Nepal. Then I found HCC.

What do you find most rewarding about sponsoring students through HCC?

I was impressed by the innocent smiles of the children in the mountain. To me, they seem to be very poor and have nothing but actually they have a lot more than I have (coming from a modern business city). I do hope they have good health, good education and one day they will be able to contribute back to their community, their country.

Do you have any advice for people trying to find a way to give back?

If anyone wants to give back to the society, I would suggest for them to focus on our next generation including food, clean water, health, education and environmental protection. Children are our future. The future is theirs.

We hope next time you come to Nepal you can meet the students at Khushi Ghar!

I would be delighted to meet the students. I think it would be great if it can be arranged when I go to Nepal next time (maybe next year).

I have been supported by HCC since I was twelve years old. I am thankful that I have a nice home called Khushi Ghar where so many students like me live. I am thankful that I never go to bed with an empty stomach and always have food in my home. I am blessed with many brothers and sisters with whom I can be myself and share happiness together. I am thankful that I have such a huge and amazing family to rely on and be able to be showered with immense love and support. I am thankful that I have friends who never judge me for who I am and I am fortunate enough to receive their emotional support. More importantly, I am grateful to be a part of HCC and receive a quality education which have aided me in achieving a secured future.

Nothing makes me happier than being able to bring a change in someone’s life. Right now, I have been volunteering in old age home by sharing and listening to their heart touching stories. I was very pleased that I could give a company in their despair situation. I also volunteered in Nepal Association of Blind (NAB) where I realized that if I share something with the people I do not lose anything instead I will be respected and loved by all. I am proud to help all needy people around me.

I am thankful for who I am today because if I had not been supported by HCC I would not have realized the true meaning of being grateful.

Appreciating people and giving positive responses to people is gratitude. I am a person who is satisfied with little things. I am very grateful for life how it is today. I had never thought that I would be this lucky and happy to be a member of HCC family. Comparing my past life with my present, there is a vast difference. I have seen myself become a smart and proactive person.

I have no idea how my life would be if I was not supported by HCC. HCC has helped me with everything I need in my life. Being a part of HCC, I have learned various life skills which will help me have a better future. I have also been involved in various volunteering activities, visiting an old age home and many more. I feel very proud and thankful to help old people when they need me. In my free time, I go to volunteer in an orphanage for about five hours a day. For me, helping people like me is like giving back to the society. I feel that I am a role model for them. Who I am today is all because of HCC supporters and well wishers. I am thankful to those who have always been appreciating me for who I am.

Being grateful is never a small thing instead it was always in my mind. The habit of being thankful begins with appreciating every good thing in life and also recognizing that there is nothing too small for you to be thankful.

My life would have been very different if I had been in some other place. The education that I have now would not be possible at all. My goal would be different from now. Right now, I am studying Chartered Accountancy and have been doing lots of hard work in it. I feel very grateful that I have got a golden chance to study and become who I want to become in future. HCC has always given me such a wonderful platform where I can share my happiness and sorrows with all my family. They are always ready to help me when I am in trouble or hardships.

So, I am very grateful for all the things that I have with me. I appreciate everything in life.

Thank you for everything.

Sankar

For me, Gratitude is appreciating and being thankful and returning the kindness. Gratitude can transform life by strengthening and enhancing faith and relationships. Gratitude can also help me block negative emotions and bring positive vibes.

Before, I used to be ungrateful for what I had and I never actually realized the importance of gratitude. Finally, my life had a gradual change.

I was supported by HCC at a very young age. At that time, I understood what life meant to me. I had so much to learn from my brothers and sisters at HCC. HCC changed my life because it has turned me into a strong and capable person. I have learnt many life skills and has got a chance to explore the various skilled development programs like menstrual hygiene, cleaning campaign and rallies and many more. It has already been 4 months that I have been volunteering at the Nepal Association of Blind (NAB). I go there and dictate them with their courses. Getting involved in this type of voluntarily work makes me feel proud of myself that I am able to give back to those in need. Quite literally, what I realized over time was that gratitude transformed my life by bringing out the positivity. Being thankful and appreciating what you have rather than what you don’t have makes you happier about life. The things that I have been very grateful are as follows:

He is grateful, kind and a true success story. We asked him what “hope” means to him.

Hope

What was empty a decade ago, now is filled with positivity, aspiration, expectation, and hopefulness. The vacuum that was being inherited from one generation to another has vanished during my lifetime. The rays of hope have finally penetrated the darkness and have spread its light all over my family, and my society. If Himalayan Children’s Charities had not bestowed its love and kindness upon me, then the emptiness and darkness that existed in my family tree would be perennial and would be passed on to many generations to come. With every passing day, Himalayan Children’s Charities has made me hopeful for a better future and a quality life.

This piece of writing that you have been reading is a very good example of how Himalayan Children Charities has transformed my life. Before me, none of my family members were able to read and write, not even in our native language. More interestingly, I am the only person in my family to complete secondary education and study all the way through university. The way Himalayan Children’s Charities has educated me with care, nurture, and joy has helped to make me feel capable, independent, and important. The education that HCC is providing me has helped me discover new hopes and have provided me with strength and mentorship to fulfill it.

The life that once was full of despair and desolation is now marked with positivity and enthusiasm. Himalayan Children Charities have been an antidote and spreading perpetual light to eradicate stress, fear, and sadness from my life. With the support of Himalayan Children’s Charities, uncertainties have become certain and the pain has completely healed. It has helped me build hope while times are good and so that I can handle when life takes the worse turn.

Pabitra recently finished her grade 10 in her home village of Dhading and moved into Khushi Ghar to continue her education, she wants to be a social worker. All month we are asking the students to tell us what education means to them, here Pabitra elaborates on what the opportunity means to her:

Education is one of the most important tools of our life. Without education it is impossible to do so many things. Education is the key if we want to bring changes in our home and family, society, country and world. Personal and societal development is the result of education. All the people living in this world deserve education.

If we look at the history of Nepal, there has been discrimination and social hinderances for people to get education. I believe this has led to more discriminatory practices, and social problems and evils, which continue to hamper the development of the nation today. Nepal is a poor, developing country in part due to a lack of education among the masses. I think that if people had been given an opportunity to go to school since generations past, today Nepal would have been like the United States where things are more well-developed. So, quality education should be given to all.

Talking about myself, as a child I was supported by my uncle for my care and education in the village. He always took good care of me. At the same time, I had to work a lot so I didn’t have much time to focus on my studies. I used to wake up at 4am each morning to go to work at my uncle’s small restaurant. I would work in the mornings, attend my classes, and then come back to work again until 8pm each night. I used to study as much as I could, but I was often tired and also short on time.

Being supported by HCC since this year, various doors are opening up for me. My life is beginning to change and even my interests are different and new. I am learning new things here like sewing and I am becoming a part of the HCC family. Before, when I was in the village, I thought that I was the only one like me, without a mom or dad. But when I came to HCC, I met so many friends like me and I don’t feel alone anymore. I am surrounded by people here who understand me, and there are so many more kind people around the world who care about us, and that feels so good.

Now, I feel that I can do many things in my life, and that there are lots of possibilities in front of me. Before, I used to study in a village government school. I didn’t get to learn English there, and there were not enough teachers. Now I have an opportunity to study in a good college in Kathmandu and I am very thankful.

I feel very happy and grateful that I am being supported by HCC. I have always been curious to know many things in life, to explore many places, and to learn new things which I am unfamiliar with. I had never thought that one day my life would change this beautifully.

For me, education is my first priority, so that I can gain knowledge and move forward in my life. Education is playing a vital role in uplifting my future.

Every month we ask the students to talk to us about a different theme. This month is “life skills”. Kamala weighs in on what skills she has learned and how they will benefit her in the future.

The term “life skills” refers to the skills you need to make the most out of life. It is usually used to talk about any of the skills needed to deal well and effectively with life’s challenges. Life skills are all about the challenges.

Life skills are not about theoreticals, but instead about being practical and applying skills in our daily lives. We all need a set of core life skills to manage work, family and relationships successfully. These skills include planning, focus, self-control, awareness and flexibility. All the life skills that exists are equally important as they directly and indirectly impacted our lives.

One life skill that I have learned and am excited about is making food. I am very good at cooking food and I enjoy it at the same time. I cook one meal per alternate day for the eight students who I live with at the girls annex house. Whenever I am free, I also come to Khushi Ghar to help our younger brothers and sisters with cooking.

Decision making is another life skill that I like the most because I am in a transition phase now in my life, and this skill helps me to deal constructively with making choices about my life. Nowadays, I can make decisions on my own, for my own future, and in order to reach my goals.

The life skills that I am best at are interpersonal because I am able to make and keep friendly relationships, which are of great importance to our mental and social well being. I can easily be friendly and get connected to people whom I just meet. I also have many old friendships and connections that I nurture and mean a lot to me.
